A film look, as a full node tree, for free.
This is the PowerGrade I use to get footage looking like film in DaVinci Resolve. Not one LUT on one node. The whole chain, built in a DaVinci Wide Gamut timeline, with every stage on its own node so you can see what each one does and change it.
What's in the tree:
- Input colour space transform. Set it to your camera and you're in.
- Balance, contrast and saturation, each on its own node.
- Power windows, ready to shape.
- The film nodes: the softness, mist and sharpening that make digital stop looking digital.
- Alive, my film print LUT. I built it from scratch as a better version of the Kodak 2383 LUTs that ship with Resolve. It only exists in this grade.
One look. It's the look on the product image. If you want more stocks, lab dials and a false colour checker, that's After Light, coming November 16.
Works on any camera. The grade is built for a DaVinci Wide Gamut / Intermediate timeline, so the only thing you set is the input colour space and gamma on the first node to match what you shot on. Sony, Canon, Blackmagic, Panasonic, Fuji, iPhone Log. All of them.
Works in Resolve Free and Studio.
How to install (do the LUT first, or the grade's print node will show up empty):
- Download both files: the Alive print LUT (.cube) and the PowerGrade (.drx).
- Install Alive. In Resolve, open Project Settings > Color Management and click Open LUT Folder. Drop the Alive .cube in there, then click Update Lists.
- Import the grade. On the Color page, open the Gallery, right-click in the PowerGrades album, choose Import, and pick the .drx.
- Set the timeline colour space to DaVinci WG / Intermediate in Project Settings.
- Apply the grade to a clip, open the first node, and set the input colour space and gamma to your camera. Check the print node is pointing at Alive.
